Manual Transmission: Fuel Consumption

We had a lot of discussions on various topics during the 02/07/2016  member's meet in Abuja, last weekend. I recalled one of us asking specifically about manual transmissions and fuel consumption , and how to achieve the fuel economy claimed. It was an important question, because not many people know why they seem not to achieve fuel economy expected.

Now, if you decide to drive your lion probably less than 80 km/h or decide not to do high-speed with your stick lion (lion with manual gearbox), it's very ok. But if your Lion's manual gearbox has 4, 5 or 6 as top speeds, don't keep the momentum of the lions speed going with RPM on tachometer reading less than 2,000 in any of those 3 high gears I earlier mentioned. (4, 5 & 6).

The engine and gear ratio will determine vehicle speed at what engine speed (rpm) and what gear speed. Some engines and gearboxes could do or maintain 80 km/h at gear 4, reading over 2,000 rpm (maybe). What matters is, those 3 high speed gears are meant to be driven at higher rpm to work or run the vehicle efficiently. If you drive a stick lion on highway with rpm reading less than 2,000 on gear 4, 5 or 6, your fuel consumption will go very high, irrespective of vehicle speed. Engines struggle more on those gears when rpm is less than 2,000.

But as for gear 1, 2 & 3, the lower the rpm, the lesser fuel engine consumes. But it doesn't mean you should drive gear 3 at 1,000 rpm either.

But do whatever feels good to you. Just take care of your lion, and most importantly, yourself.

Drive with pride!

Ikenna, Lion King.
